Citizens Air Concerns of Road Conditions

This is one of the articles I’ve written as an employee at the Stewart Webster Journal Patriot-Citizen. It was published on July 22, 2010, on the front page and continued on page eight.

Several residents of W.J. Storey Road attended the Schley County Board of Commissioners’ meeting on Tuesday to air concerns about the condition of the road.

Led by Mr. Eddie Slaughter, the residents informed the commissioners of the drainage problems causing the dirt road to frequently wash out after a rain and cause vehicles to get stuck. Residents pointed out that not only does this issue hinder the citizens living on the road, but it also disturbs mail delivery and school bus routes.

The commissioners assured the citizens that someone would come the following day to drag the road, since it had not been done in several weeks. The commissioners also offered to sell the residents culverts at cost to divert runoff water from their driveways.

During the meeting, the commissioners also approved two new ordinances. The first of which bans fishing from bridges on county roads. The second requires that all new buildings connect to county water if available.

There was also discussion on a contract with the Sumter County Fire Department to purchase their water from Schley County. The fee for this usage has not yet been set; however, a flat rate was suggested rather than installing a meter.
